Summary

United We Can (UWC) was founded by Ken Lyotier in 1995. What began as a bottle depot where the local community could return recyclables for deposits - an important source of income for many - has grown into a self-described “street charity”. UWC programs now support socially and environmentally sustainable enterprises.

UWC’s operating costs are covered through industrial handling fees, allowing the program to provide 24 full-time jobs as well as part-time jobs for community members and to fund a variety of other programs with minimal public assistance.

Community initiatives include BikeWorks, The Happy Plants, Bintek Computer Lab and WeCan 2.
